Modern Day Sabbath

Once per week, I celebrate a modern-day Sabbath.⠀

The specific day I celebrate is based upon my teaching schedule, so every term looks different. This term it’s on Tuesdays.⠀

So what does a modern-day Sabbath look like?⠀

– I sleep-in as my number one priority. I have no agenda of needing to get up in the morning. It is one of the most amazing feelings that I can have.⠀
– I stay off electronics, except to communicate with family⠀
– I visit with friends and family⠀
– I read Christian books⠀
– I listen to Christian music⠀
– I reflect and journal⠀
– I take naps⠀
– I take long showers⠀
– I pray⠀
– I go for long walks or hikes⠀
– I eat good food⠀
– I do anything that brings me joy⠀

What strikes me as crazy is my feeling of needing to be busy when I first get up. I know that my day is just meant for relaxation, but I constantly feel anxious because I feel like I need to be getting things done. My thoughts constantly sway toward what I am “supposed to” be doing. Then I realize my “supposed to” tasks are to relax and enjoy life. It’s only after I wake up for a while, and get over that feeling, that I can truly enjoy the day.⠀

We live in a world where we’re always so busy, we always have things to do, we always have to-do lists. But trust me when I say, it’s nice to commit one day just to relaxation and enjoyment. Nothing on my schedule.⠀

Try it sometime, I think you’ll like it.⠀
