Flik: Here, pretend – pretend that that’s a seed.
Dot: It’s a rock.
Flik: Oh, I know it’s a rock, I know. But let’s just pretend for a minute that it’s a seed, alright? We’ll just use our imaginations. Now, now do you see our tree? Everything that made that giant tree is already contained inside this tiny little seed. All it needs is some time, a little bit of sunshine and rain, and voilá!
Dot: This rock will be a tree?
Flik: Seed to tree. You’ve gotta work with me, here. Alright? Okay. Now, y-you might not feel like you can do much now, but that’s just because, well, you’re not a tree yet. You just have to give yourself some time. You’re still a seed.
Dot: But it’s a rock.
Flik: [shouting] I know it’s a rock! Don’t you think I know a rock when I see a rock? I’ve spent a lot of time around rocks!
Dot: You’re weird, but I like you.

Did you know that an average-sized aspirin bottle can hold over 180,000 mustard seeds? When planted in fertile soil, just one of those miniscule seeds can produce a 10-foot bush within 3 months. Can you even imagine what it would look like to plant 180,000 mustard seeds in a field? How much growth would their be? What kind of an impact would that growth have on everything around it? How far reaching would that field be? How different would the land look after only a short time? I’m not even sure I can comprehend the impact of that growth.

In one of my favorite bible verses, Jesus says, “I tell you the truth, if you had faith even as small as a mustard seed, you could say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it would move. Nothing would be impossible.” – Matthew 17:20 (NLT).

Whenever I feel like I am doubting myself, doubting my faith, or doubting God’s ability to see me through something, I try to remember the mustard seed. Just one tiny seed can grow to be so large. Just one glimmer of hope – of belief – can lead to so much. One positive thought can expand into so many more, until we are surrounded by a field of mustard plants all around us. The potential growth can be too large to even comprehend. It can be so large that it can even move a mountain from here to there. But it all starts from just one miniscule mustard seed-sized belief. The belief that God is in charge. The belief that you are good enough. The faith that you, too, can make that impact on the world. The faith that God wants you to.

“Give me faith like a mustard seed and I’ll keep on growin’
Plant me deep in the ground you see and I’ll keep on hopin’
Cover me with the gentle rain that comes from Your Holy Spirit
And I’ll grow into a tree of love”- Extermumverbummusic, 1997
