Farina has by far become my kids’ favorite breakfast. It is very similar to cream of wheat, but I like it better. They have been asking for it everyday. Today was supposed to be tempeh for breakfast, but no one in the family likes it, so we substituted a breakfast of farina with blueberries and walnuts. Good choice!
Today was a day full of errands, and everything was thrown off-kilter. We meant to only stop by the sporting goods store to buy baseball pants for Rhys, but ended up staying for several hours to pick out running shoes for all of the kids. We have a race planned to tonight, and realized no one had appropriate shoes to be running in (let alone that they just needed shoes in general). Then we hit the library to check out books, a few other quick errands, and then to the garden store to buy plants for our garden.
I ended up eating lunch incredibly late, in the car, in the middle of running errands. Not the best set up, but it worked. We bought bagels for the kids. The bagels smelled SO GOOD. It was my first true moment of weakness. I wanted a bite so badly! However, both Cory and I held out, and I am very proud of us. Then to top it off, we visited the Saturday Market, and Cory bought four mini pies. What?!? Talk about temptation! He bought one for each of the kids, and they looked so good (kids still haven’t eaten them yet, but we are saving them for later this weekend). One was even strawberry rhubarb (my favorite)! I felt like I was being tempted right and left today, but I stayed the course!
Knowing we had the race in the evening, and that we had eaten a late lunch, we ended up skipping snack and ate an early dinner. It was DELICIOUS! I am loving all the new recipes we get to try, and am glad I can incorporate them in the future, regardless of whether I stay vegan or not. The two younger kids did not like the dinner at all, but ate it with only minimum fuss. I feel like it might be more related to a tired set of boys, rather that the food itself. However, Ellie was in love with the zucchini soup! I have a feeling that she will be taking the boy’s leftovers in her lunch next week.
After dinner, it was time to head to the race!
We (all five of us) ran in the GLOW XC race, which was 4.25 miles at Elijah Bristow Park. It started at 9:30pm, so I was a little afraid for all of our stamina, but we lasted well. It was a combination of pavement and trail running, and the entire course was outlined in glowing lights in paper bags. It was really a lot of fun!
We started the race off together, but Rhys wanted to run faster, so Cory took off with him at a strong pace. Ellie, Keenan and I stayed behind. We did well for about the first 2.25 miles, but then the kids started to get tired, and we ended up walking/jogging for a bit. I know I am not supposed to do heavy activity while on the Ultimate Reset, but we were signed up for the race before I ever bough the Reset, so I figured I would just chance it. I actually lasted quite well, and I think I had enough energy that I could have ran the whole thing if they kids would have kept up.
The kids all did excellent in the race! Rhys came in first for his age division, and Ellie and Keenan both placed third for their age division. Granted, there were not a lot of kids there, but they were all so proud and excited, we didn’t choose to point that out to them 🙂 They did an excellent job, and I am glad we did it as a family! It is so nice to be able to teach them that physical fitness can be fun, and now Ellie wants to plan a half marathon in the next two years (before she turns 20). It may have sparked her to get a little more active, which is always good.
After the race, we were all tired, and returned home quickly. The younger kids fell asleep in the car, and I don’t think us older three were much better than that. Cory ended up eating his snack after the race (lentil salad) because he needed the energy. I knew my body probably needed something, but I just wasn’t hungry at all, and didn’t feel like eating, so I just went to sleep.
Overall, it was a good day!
