Day 1 (18)

Have I mentioned that it is finals week of Spring Term, and I teach at two different colleges? Yep, that’s how my day went. Nothing a work went horribly, but it was very busy.

I started my morning off by watching Elliott’s (daughter, 17) senior review for graduation. This determines whether she graduates with honors and her double major in Math and Media Arts. She always gets so nervous. However, she did really well, especially considering there were technical difficulties right from the beginning. All-in-all, she held her cool together pretty well. I was super proud of her for struggling through it, but it seems as if she didn’t quite do well enough to earn a 4 on it (she got a 3+, out of 4), which means she needs to repeat it tomorrow if she wants a chance to graduate with honors.

She was absolutely demoralized. I felt so badly for her, and my heart felt broken for her tonight, as I know how much time and energy she put into preparing. However, if I am going to be honest, the teacher in me actually believes it is a great life-lesson for her. Things can always be improved, and sometimes you have to put a little extra work in to make something perfect. I also appreciate that not everyone receives the award/honors automatically, but you have to perform at a certain level to receive them. Then again, I am the parent who fights against giving out trophies at the end of all kids’ sports seasons. Not everyone deserves an award, and it belittles it for people who work hard to perform and receive them if everyone gets one. Regardless of my feelings, she is working hard in her room to fix her weak spots, she has come to me for advice and guidance, and I am extremely proud of her for continuing to persevere to make the presentation better. She is more and more proud of her product/presentation, the more that she refines it.

After her presentation, I gave a final in my Exercise Physiology class up at the community college, and then started in on my Exit Interviews that I am doing with all of my (40+) Exercise and Movement Science students this week. I love times of evaluation, and love getting to know more of what the students thought of the program this year. I have already identified some thing I could do to help them more in the future, and love listening to their suggestions and perceptions. I will say, my favorite question by far, is “What was your single most significant experience, in or out of the classroom, during your time here (so far)?” There have been some amazing answers, with a lot of them focusing on how they have helped someone lose weight, increase their fitness, or gain confidence. The students are so proud of the work they are doing, love that they are able to help make a direct impact on someone’s life, and are starting to see the rewards for going into the field of fitness. I am so incredibly happy for them, and can’t wait to see what their futures hold!

After work, I picked up the kids, and took Keenan (son, 7) to baseball practice. It was another hot day here, so the kids were a little sluggish, but they did well overall.

Today was a great food day. I have really enjoyed the fruit for breakfast everyday, although I don’t feel like it fills me up quite as much as it did in the beginning of the program. I was nervous for lunch today, as I don’t usually like cabbage, but it was DELICIOUS! I only used half the dressing, and was glad that I did. I think it would have been a little overwhelming if it were stronger. The soup was supposed to be miso soup, but I substituted homemade veggie broth for it. Because of the late dinner (after practice), I had wished I would have prepared a snack for today, but survived without one. For dinner, the menu called for garlic veggies, but I was missing the stir fry veggies from the first week (they were so good!). I even went on the Ultimate Reset FB support page to verify with staff members that I was “okay” making this substitution (using coconut and sesame oil in place of the olive oil for the veggies for tonight), and they it was the equivalent. I was so glad I did. My family gobbled up these veggies, even Rhys (son, 9) who normally saves veggies for last and complains about zucchini (other veggies seem to be okay for him) ate everything immediately. Cory (husband), also enjoyed them after he finally got home late tonight from work. I somehow missed my supplement before dinner, so I am waiting my two hours after eating to finish everything off tonight.
