I hear voices in my head all the time…..maybe that explains a few things.
Sometimes they put me down and criticize me, and sometimes they lift me up and motivate me.
Voice #1: You are not GOOD enough. You are not PRETTY enough. You are WEAK. You weren’t even SMART enough to stay in graduate school. You don’t WORK HARD enough. You are so LAZY. You are not FUNNY at all. You are way too FAT. You are not FAST enough. You are a horrible MOM. If you really loved your HUSBAND, you wouldn’t treat him like that. You’re FAMILY can’t count on you for anything. Why would anyone ever want to spend time with you, anyway?
Voice #2: You are AMAZING. You just NAILED that test. You are FEELING and LOOKING good! That was so must FASTER than last time! Holy cow, did you even see HOW MUCH you just LIFTED? You put so much EFFORT into that, and it really paid off. Man, you CRACK ME UP. Your KIDS love you so much, it really shows. I can see the love in your HUSBANDS eyes for you. I wish you were part of my FAMILY. You are the most MOTIVATIONAL and INSPIRATIONAL person I know, that’s why people thank you for pushing them to be a better person.
These voices fight back and forth in my mind all the time. It is like an internal war inside my brain. That really wreaks havoc on my emotions and self-image.
Slowly, I am starting to listen to Voice #2, more and more, and turn down the volume for Voice #1.
It’s hard….it feels like Voice #1 has been there for LONGER, and has been a lot LOUDER in recent years.
But, remember back to when Voice #2 spoke to you as a CHILD. You believed every word of it, and you felt like you could CONQUER the world. In reality, you DID achieve all you wanted back then, and more. A lot of that came because you listened to Voice #2 more.
Maybe it’s time to put more stock into Voice #2……
