I used my cane in public for the first time today…..and I didn’t die.
After a few really rough weeks about six months ago, I broke down and bought a cane (two of them, actually). I had found myself too many times not being able to walk without a helping hand, or even so fatigued I had to sit down on the floor in the middle of the grocery store because I couldn’t keep walking.
But for whatever reason……I still haven’t used either of them in public since I bought them.
Two weeks at camp, too little sleep last night, a hot sunny day, and a plan of walking around the Lane County Fair left me thinking it was time I bit the bullet, and break out a cane. Knowing I would be waiting in lines, and knowing I hurt most when I am just standing still (not moving), I opted for my cane that also has a seat. Genius!
Oh. My. Goodness. It helped so much!!
And you know what……..I ran into many people I knew and no one even asked me about my cane, I didn’t feel like everyone was staring at me, and people actually seemed less likely to cut me off while walking (it’s always hard to maneuver in crowds).
Pride. Fear. Embarrassment. None of those mattered, and that felt good.
I ROCKED my cane!! 🤘🏽
